Not Only Chairs: Exhibition of Modern Danish Design in the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow, 1969-70
This talk considers the exhibition of Danish design in Moscow in the winter of 1969-70 as a remarkable case of cultural diplomacy in the Cold War and as the ground for critical discussion among Soviet design professionals.
Danish design has long become an international brand, while the myth of the "Golden Age" of Danish design has been popular in Russia. For instance, in 2017 Moscow Design Museum staged an exhibition with the telling title "The Legends of Danish Design". The highlights of that show were chairs by famous Danish designers, presented like masterpieces. Was such a vision of Danish design as an admired model to emulate typical for late socialism, too?
