The Long 1989? How to research the system change of “1989” with focus on culture and the Nordic-Baltic region
Start-off symposium.
The symposium marks the start of the research project 1989: Changing Europe? Contemporary History as Cultural Heritage task for the Art Museums supported by the Augustinus Foundation program in Cultural Heritage. The project will run from 2025 to 2028.
Understood as The Long 1989 (approx. 1985-1996), the project will put a new art historical perspective on the geopolitical, but also societal and cultural upheavals in the Nordic-Baltic region and their significance for the situation today. Was culture an active component in the system change and did exchanges in the Nordic-Baltic region play a specific role in changing Europe? Now 30 years after the events, it is necessary for several reasons to look at the meanings of the European 1989.
Researchers from various fields will give their response to the notion of a “Long 1989” and what is the state-of-the-arts on research in the system change of “1989” with focus on culture and the Nordic-Baltic region.
