Satire og kras kritik af religion har været en fast bestanddel af europæisk kultur siden 1100-tallet, viser satireforsker Dennis Meyhoff Brink i en ny ph.d.-afhandling. Og han argumenterer for, at religionssatiren har spillet en større rolle for udbredelsen af demokratiske værdier i Europa end kristendommen.
