In the sixteenth through seventeenth centuries at the Danish royal court, fireworks as well as both ephemeral and mobile decorations were used to supplement the permanent constructions of the court. For a short time, the mobility of parade floats and the shining lights of fireworks as well as ephemeral representations of controversial figures transgressed the everyday limits of the court. Not only did the mobile decorations allow more dynamic stagings of royal splendor in the streets of a given town, but ephemeral decorations also seem to have been the preferred medium for representations of the ruler's enemies. In this paper, I seek to present how temporary decorations were used on festive occasions to augment the everyday space of the Danish court and how these relate to other contemporary European examples. By doing this, I wish to investigate the underlying transnational notions of space, ephemerality, art, and nature of the time.
