The essay examines the re-mediation of Per Højholts poem Turbo into a radiophonic
montage broadcasted by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation February 18th 1969. The piece
was later the same year published on a lp-record by Højholt, Peter Kristiansen and Clemens
Johansen titled Turbo. En Spacefiction (Turbo. A Spacefiction). The essay looks at the spatial
dimension of the work, hypothesizing that the imaginary spaces of acousmatic radio may not
only reflect contemporary soundscapes, but also constructs models for ways of listening to
contemporary environments. It is proposed that Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of consolidation
through refrain (or ritournelle) may be useful in describing the compositional practise
of Turbo. En Spacefiction, where different sonic layers are merged together by way of
rhythmic repetition. As suggested by numerous sounds of jet motors, astronauts and sonic
booms as well as sounds of radio- and telecommunication the work investigates unknown
territories made accessible by modern technologies and suggests ways of comprehending
these spaces aurally.
