My research project traces the development of anti-racist campaign posters from three UK-based organisations: Greater London Council (1980s), The Commission for Racial Equality (1990s), and Operation Black Vote (2000s). The project focuses on visual rhetoric with a particular interest in the use of analogy and political imaginary as it pertains to anti-racism. How is the future of anti-racism presented throughout the different eras?

Building on traditions of black feminist geography, I call into question ideas of the city and citizenship. How and where do these organisations communicate their message? Who are they speaking to? Considering both the urban dynamics of cities such as London, as well as the political and cultural climate, this project seeks to provide an overview of anti-racist visuality in the UK.

I am affiliated with The UCL Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the Study of Racism and Racialisation.
