The working title of my dissertation is 'Between Parnassus and Calvary. A Literary History of the Early Modern Martyr Drama'. The project researches how the literary models of ancient tragedy and martyr story converged in a wave of martyr theatre in 16th and 17th century Europe, focusing on its Spanish, French, and German vernacular traditions.
In reading these dramas, I am interested in how modern literature and theatre developed conceptually and institutionally in negotiation with religious aesthetic forms.
As part of the project, I am compiling the first catalogue of martyr theatre across Europe. It currently counts more than 200 pieces from the 16th and 17th century in French, Spanish, Dutch, German, Latin, Catalan, English, Italian, and Danish. I receive any suggestions for this or my project in general gratefully.
