GRAM/ART. Bacteria as Art Media. From Breeding Containers to Actors
An examination of the relationship between knowledge about bacteria and aesthetics reveals two key strategies between which artists oscillate in their use of bacteria, one in which bacteria are blind spots, or ‘workhorses’ at the service of molecular or synthetic biology; the other, in which bacteria are epistemologically prolific in-between organisms, acquiring agency in functioning ecologies, or as metaphoric role models.
