Please join us for a closed masterclass exploring intersections of arts-based research methodologies and communication studies. Professor Nico Carpentier will present his film essay AGON as an example of how artistic practice can serve as both method and outcome in media research.
This session will examine how arts-based approaches can unfold and unpack complex theoretical concepts in communication and media studies, offering masterclass participants insights into alternative research methodologies that combine academic investigation with creative expression.
Bio
Nico Carpentier is an academic, curator and artist who holds the position of Extraordinary Professor at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. A leading figure in international media and communication research, he served as President of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (2020-2024) and Vice-President of the European Communication Research and Education Association (2008-2012). Carpentier's theoretical focus centers on discourse theory, with research situated at the intersection of communication, politics and culture. His work particularly examines social domains including war and conflict, ideology, participation and democracy. His most recent publication is Democracy and Media in Europe: A Discursive-Material Approach (co-authored with Jeffrey Wimmer, Routledge 2024).
