Diffractions and the (un-)making of difference: transcultural practices in postmigrant theatre and in school

The aim of this symposium is to reflect on our analysis of transcultural practices and to discuss its relevance in current academic and socio-political discourses around migration, aesthetic formation and education. We will also share and discuss the outcomes of our final publication, which is in preparation.

Through the four “stages” of the symposium and its theoretical, performative, transmissive and ethnographic perspectives and analyses, we explore non-essentialist and diffractive ways of thinking constructions and deconstructions of difference. The transdisciplinary cast of the symposium consists of experts from cultural, postcolonial and gender studies, media and sound studies, sociology and migration studies, and educational studies.

Admission is to the symposium is free and requires no registration.

The symposium is organized by Dr. Carla J. Maier (University of Copenhagen) and the research project Transcultural Practices in Postmigrant Theatre and School (Prof. Birgit Althans, Academy of the Arts, Düsseldorf) in collaboration with the Sound Studies Lab and the Research Group Sound & Senses  (Prof. Holger Schulze, University of Copenhagen).

The event is supported by the Marie Curie research project TRAVELLING SOUNDS, and the research group Sound & Senses at the Department of Arts & Cultural Studies.

The project Transcultural Practices in Postmigrant Theatre and School trakubi.com was designed as a transdisciplinary ethnographic study exploring how difference is performed, challenged, constructed and deconstructed - especially in relation to contemporary practices and perspectives of migration and postmigration - in the two research fields postmigrant theatre and school.

We conclude this three-year-project with a symposium to present and discuss our case studies and research results with our collaboration partners and external guests.
