Frauke Katharina Wiegand


Frauke is a postdoctoral researcher in the FKK-funded research project 'Art, Culture and Politics in the Postmigrant Condition'.

She pursued her PhD in Visual Culture and Cultural Memory from Copenhagen University with a project on tourist snapshots as dynamic appropriations of sites of memory. Her Master thesis at Humboldt and Free University Berlin develops an interdisciplinary approach to communal media reception of imaginaries of 'Africa' in contemporary visual culture and points to cultural schemata of Self and Other herein.

Current research

Organizing the ‘postmigrant’ in the creative sector – agencies, strategies and networks

The empirical study aims at mapping the current practices of the ‘postmigrant creative scene’ in selected art and cultural institutions in three European cities: Copenhagen (Denmark) – Malmö (Sweden) – Berlin (Germany). Local institutions are chosen on the basis of their transcultural and inter-art programs as well as their institutional policy such as strategies and efforts to adapt to, accommodate and critically reflect the contemporary diversity of (European) societies on a local level. Both state-funded and independently organized collectives will be included to tackle the research question: what are their modes of institutionalizing a 'postmigrant manifesto' to develop an inclusive notion of the society’s majority?

A mapping of the organizational relevance of the following issues is envisaged by way of interviews, observation, informal discussions, and the analysis of institutional programs: a) personnel policy (dealing with paradoxes of visibility; quota and affirmative action; reorganization of employee and program structure, in particular: reactions to specific local conditions of postmigrant diversity); b) audiencing (self-perception, public image; awareness and targeting of audiences; accessibility); c) networking (interculture policing; strategic local and translocal networking); d) self-reflexivity and theoretical reflection (awareness of diversity and privilege debates and problems as well as actions and strategies to counter them; appropriation of and participation in ongoing academic research).
